Abstract

The zygomatic bones, given their position and projection in the facial skeleton, are more susceptible to fractures after facial trauma episodes. lf fracture happens, it should be treated in order to restore facial symmetry and avoid functional disturbances of mastication (limited mouth opening) and eyes (diplopia and enohthalmos, disturbances that can be associated with conventional surgical approaches). The use of minimally invasive surgical procedures, such as video assisted surgery, has been broadly adopted by many surgical specialties in the last decades, but there are few reports of facial trauma cases. Recently, the minimally invasive surgical techniques in maxillofacial surgery are used for the treatment of facial fractures, including fractures of the zygomatic complex, in order to make the procedures less invasive, visualize the broken segments better and obtain unnoticeable scares, diminishing the rate of postoperative complications. This article describes the case of a patient with unilateral fracture of the zygomatic bone on which video-assisted surgery was used as an aid for treatment.
