Challenges and opportunitiesfaced by informationprofessionals and librarians in the new era of knowledge society have been analyzed and its characteristics pointed out. A discussion isplaced about the responsibilities which are to be assigned to the various social structure components, so that knowledge society may really happen to government, society, its institutions and communities, and the individuals. Some points singled out for discussions were: it is necessary to make the Brazilian information professionals acquainted with digitalization and to identify new demandsfor the informationprofessional, mainlyfor the librarian.
