Religião como objeto científico a partir de uma abordagem definicional

O artigo aborda a questão definicional do objeto religião, inicialmente, a partir de três posturas frequentemente observadas na Ciência da Religião: 1) é impossível ou desnecessário definir religião; 2) uma definição pode ser dada de forma relativa; e 3) uma definição de nosso objeto de estudo é necessária. Após o delineamento das três perspectivas, consideramos o problema levando em conta os principais momentos da disciplina ao longo de sua história com pouco mais de um século e meio: a Ciência da Religião clássica, sobretudo com os “pais fundadores” (Max Müller, Petrus Tiele e Chantepie de la Saussaye), o ramo fenomenológico e, por fim, seu último desdobramento mais significativo, a Ciência Cognitiva Evolucionária) da Religião. Na última seção, defendemos a necessidade de um conceito de religião cientificamente estabelecido, sugerindo uma abordagem definicional como ponto de partida metodológico e discutindo alguns de seus desafios. Em conclusão, destacamos a superação desta questão central como condição para o conhecimento sistemático de nosso objeto de estudo com relevância e progressividade científica.
