The Jesuits and religious education in Brazil

This paper discusses the beginning of religious education in Brazil, showing the way Portugal performed the early educational initiatives in colonial Brazil, in which catechetical and educational actions were taken by the Society of Jesus, a religious order of The Catholic Church. The Jesuits, by unconditional Portuguese royal support, hegemonically developed educational work on native lands at a time when The Church sought to gain strength. The Society of Jesus, headed by Father Manuel da Nóbrega, landed in Brazil in 1549, with the mission of evangelizing and teaching. The first educational attempts of the Jesuits involved the indigenous children, because adult Indians evaded and rejected the approach aiming at catechization. The purpose of this paper is to review Brazilian education in colonial Brazil, during the historical period from 1549 to 1759, a time when the Jesuits developed their religious and educational activities in the country and were later expelled by the Marquis of Pombal.
