Abstract

These reflections aim principally at exploring the relationship between faith and reason, and faith and
science in the scholastic thought, more specifically, in the 13th century. As a matter of fact, this dilemma goes as far back as the first centuries of the Christian era; the emphasis, however, was placed upon the relationship between “Christian wisdom” and “pagan wisdom". In the llth century, Anselm of Aosta
deepens the question of intellection of faith as he shows that faith and reason do not contradict nor identify each other, but mutually complete one another. In the 12th century, Peter Abelard gives theology the status of science as he presents it as a systematic study of the entire doctríne of Christian faith. Along
the 13th century, with the foundation of universities and the reception ofAristotle in the Latin Occident, this dilemrna, now posed in terms of faith and science, intensifies and becomes more complex amid thetension
and conflict between Aristotelianism and Platonisrn or, more preciseIy, Neoplatonism.
