Etty Hillesum and Literature (of testimony) as love for afters

Our goal in this study is, in general, to offer a possible reading of Etty Hillesum’s letters, since most existing studies in Brazil about this writer focus on diaries. More specifically, we seek to answer some questions, among them, how to think about the correspondence of this woman with a highly developed spirituality what literary theory calls Testimony Literature, since her writing has some particularities that strictly escape that classification. We propose to think, in addition, how her writing is based on a concern for the future of humanity and is based on Hillesum’s love for posterity. The methodology employed consisted of a critical-analytical reading of the letters, closely followed by studies on Etty Hillesum, where we mainly used Maria Clara Bingemer’s texts with the purpose of highlighting a little of her great legacy. The results attained show Hillesum’s writing as an important testimony of a time, as well as differing from the many texts read in the light of Testimony Literature, since in addition to the pain and horror, we also find in her writing the humor, love and beauty.
