ESTIMATION OF WATER QUALITY OF THE GOIANA RIVER BASIN, PERNAMBUCO - BRAZIL

The Goiana river basin, situated in coastal Pernambuco State, has an area of 2,863 km2, with 77% in Zona da Mata and 23% in Agreste. This research shows the nine years' analysis result (1990 - 1998). The variables measured were: temperature, pH, colar,
.turbidity, conductivity, chloride, dissolved oxygen, B.O.D., fecal coliform, total phosphorus, nitrate and total solids. Principal Components Analysis was used. The sampling points differed regarding the variables, especially conductivity and total solids. The results showed that water quality was inappropriate, principal downstream of the sugar and alcohol plants and in those districts where there is no basic sanitation.
