Abstract

The Barn owl Tyto alba, known in Brazil as “suindara” or “coruja-de-igreja” is widely distribuited and very common throughout the country. The objective of this study was toget to know the feeding habits of the Barn owl subspecies in Brazil, Tyto alba tuidara, by identifying the small mammal bones regurgitated within pellets in the region of Indaiatuba, SP, from 1991 to 1993. Tyto alba tuidara fed on Mus musculus brevirostris, Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus (49,5%, 37,6% and 12,8% respectively) as well as other invertebrates belonging to the groups Coleoptera, Orthoptera and Arachnida.
