Abstract

Echinochloa Beauv. taxa are important rice field weeds in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). The object of this work was to characterize foliar epidermis microhairs in order to further taxonomic studies in this group: E. crusgalli (H.B.K.) Beauv. var. crusgalli and var. mitis (Pursh) Peterrm. and E. colona (L.) Link were collected in different counties from Rio

Grande do Sul. The analysis was carried out on epidermal fragments obtained by leaf shaving followed by examination under an optical microscope. The quantitative evaluations (basal cell diameter) were made by using a special ocular microscope. Data were analyzed by MULTIV program (PILLAR, 1997). E. crusgalli var. crusgalli and var. mitis have similar microhairs with an average diameter of 6.94 mm. Both differ from colona (p<0,0071) whose basal cells have a more uniform shape and average diameter of 6.08 mm.
