Abstract

This article deals with the use of images and names of animals that are found in shop signs, neon lighting, bill boards, and on walls spread around the city of Feira de Santana, State of Bahia. Animals were “hunted” through the lens of a camera by searching through neighborhoods, downtown, and the city market. A total of 46 pictures were recorded and these represent 33 different animals, which are distributed in the following taxonomic groups: mammals (16), birds (6), insects (4), fish (4), reptiles (2), and crustaceans (1). Animals have their images and/or names associated to several products and services probably to attract a great number of consumers to them. This phenomenon is related to totemism, and corroborates the hypothesis of biophilia.
