Abstract

The tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917), is one of the chief tomato pests in Brazil and in many countries in Latin America. Several studies on this species biology, behavior and plant resistance have already been conducted but very little is known about its development in commercial cultivars. Aimed at studying the biology of this insect in different cultivars of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill, the present study was carried out at the Laboratory of Entomology of the Department of Plant Health at the Faculty of Agronomy, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Experiments consisted of rearing T. absoluta on three different tomato cultivars (Empire, Santa Clara and Carmen) under laboratory conditions at 25±1ºC, 65±10% RH; and 12L:12D photoperiod. The main results were: average duration of 3.15, 2.50, 2.34 and 3.10 days respectively for the four instars and 2.10 days for the pre-pupal stage, with no significant difference among the cultivars. The viability was higher than 74% in all stages. The female pupae had the longest duration of the stage (8.05 days) when reared on Carmen cultivar. Adult longevity averaged 23.1 days with no difference between males and females. On average, 205 eggs per lay were observed. More than 89% of egg hatching was observed in all tested cultivars. The Adjusted Reproductive Potential showed that the Santa Clara cultivar favors the development of T. absoluta leading to a twofold increase in the insect population compared with the Empire and Carmen cultivars, signaling their potential for
