Structural patterns of the fish assemblage in two areas of the Cotinga Channel, Paranaguá Bay, Paraná, Brazil
Keywords:
Seasonal variation, Tidal flat, BrazilAbstract
This study assessed the structural and temporal patterns of the ichthyofauna in two sandy tidal flats, bordered mainly by sandbank vegetation. Every month, in each tidal flat, two trawls of 50 meters were carried out with a 30m x 2m seine net, mesh of 5mm and a bag 2m long. A total of 44 species and 29 families were
caught, with the Atherinella brasiliensis, Sphoeroides testudineus, Eucinostomus melanopterus, Harengula clupeola and Anchoa tricolor being the most prevalent
species. More than 80% of the individuals were immature, with the only ones present in all stages of maturity being: Atherinella brasiliensis, Anchoa parva,
Anchoa tricolor, Eucinostomus melanopterus, Bathygobius soporator and Sphoeroides testudineus. There were no significant differences between months
in terms of the average number of species, biomass and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. As for the monthly numbers of individuals caught, there was a significant difference, the highest average number occurring during the summer months. The Margalef diversity index and Pielou´s evenness index did not show
any seasonal pattern. The grouping (Cluster) and (multi-dimensional scaling) analyses showed differences in the ichthyofauna between the months of sampling, with the most common occurrence of Atherinella brasiliensis, Sphoeroides testudineus and Eucinostomus melanopterus in the warmest months. The shallow areas studied were characterized by fish which were small in size, with the largest biomass averages, number of individuals and species occurring in months with highest average temperature and lowest salinity.
