Abstract

The objective of this paper was to assess if the two forms of selenium (sodium selenite and sodium selenate) have a antagonistic effect on the toxic action of mercury chloride, by means of chronic toxicity tests (14 days), using the tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, as the test organism. The test consisted of three simultaneous replications of the treatments: I) control group; II) only mercury; III) only sodium selenite; IV) only sodium selenate; V) sodium selenite + mercury
and VI) sodium selenate + mercury. On the tenth day of collection, a significant difference (p<0.05) was found for the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in the mercury + sodium selenate treatment. By the third day, the number of lymphocytes, in fish exposed to the mercury and mercury + sodium selenate treatments, had reduced (p<0.05). The number of immature red cells increased by the seventh day (p<0.05) in the treatment with mercury only. These results indicated that the combination of mercury + sodium selenite did not cause changes to the hematological parameters, demonstrating the antagonistic effects to mercury, while the combination of mercury + sodium selenate caused synergism.
