Abstract

Leguminosae is one of the largest families among the angiosperms and with a great economic and ecological importance, such as Phaseolus and Canavalia. This family has epigeal germination, and the cotyledons provide reserves and photoassimilates, which are essential for the initial development of the plant. The aim of this study was to verify the effect of cotyledons remova/ on seedling development of Canavalia ensiformis and Phaseolus vulgaris. Therefore, it was analyzed 60 seedlings of each species, which were preserved with the cotyledons until the establishment of the first leaves and then the seedlings were paired according to size and identified as A and 8. ln seedlings A the cotyledons were removed and in seedlings B the cotyledons remained for more 7 days. At the end of the experiment, fresh and dry weights of cotyledons and seedlings were obtained and subsequently analyzed statistically ln both species, the seedlings that the cotyledons were removed developed less than in those that the cotyledons were remained for more seven days, suggesting the importance of the cotyledons in the initial development and growth of these species.
