Abstract

The recent discussion and critiques around the concept of “religion”, which escalated in the international arena and initiated the “reflexive turn” in the study of religion\s in the last thirty years had little impact on the field of history of ancient southern Levantine religion\s. While the use of “extrabiblical” sources and collision with other disciplines triggered a silent revolution in the field with profound implications, “religion” continues to be used as a self-evident concept. As a result, the ascription of “religiousness” to objects, practices, and structures continues to be prone to anachronistic projections based on an undertheorized concept and (putative) common sense. This article discusses, within this context, what makes an artifact “religious” in the history of southern Levantine religion\s by classifying strategies for ascribing “religiosity.” The limits of these strategies are further discussed in two case studies. In this regard, the article argues that researchers are losing religion because of their limiting Western strategies and suggests that researchers, instead of narrowing, continue loosening the concept of religion.
