The sacred meaning of religion

The article reflects on the definition of religion. It addresses its etymology, problematizes its conceptualization, discusses the shaping of worldviews in relation to culture, and highlights how sacred and religious sentiment communicates ontological knowledge. The objective is to examine the epistemological trajectory of religious studies regarding the treatment of the religious phenomenon, emphasizing the examination of the sacred category carried out by Mircea Eliade, Peter Berger and Thomas Luckman, Rudolf Otto, and Roger Caillois; related to the contributions of Rubem Alves and to the criticism of modernity/coloniality proposed by Anibal Quijano. Finally, it advocates for
the recovery of the sacred as a viable epistemological category approaching religious studies in confluence with the decolonial paradigm. To this end, a bibliographic review was carried out on works by colonial, postcolonial, and decolonial authors, to analyze how subjectivity and objectivity of knowledge can interact, interpenetrate, and exchange diverse knowledge that ultimately corroborate the emancipation of epistemic oppression.
