Like any science, studies of religion are permanently under construction, in both practical and institutional dimensions. Sciences evolve in their theories and methods, always moving from the investigation to the status of a normal science, recognized by an academic community. They are instituted by epistemological criteria and political decisions. In Brazil, the Science of Religion positions itself in an original way in this process throughout its history and within the different conjunctures. The article reflects on this identity under construction within the national academic community and presents the challenges for the Higher Education institutions dedicated to this area
of knowledge.
